In the property sector, people often talk about "kerb appeal". This is how your home looks to potential buyers passing by.
It rests on an assumption borne out by many studies. The assumption is that people pick up on signs of personality and professional status without even trying. Everything from the cut of your curtains to the way you trim your hedges could, it seems, communicate something about you.
Taking this to its logical extreme, could your front door alone say something about you? After all, it's the part of your house that gets the longest look from visitors of all kinds as they wait to be let in.
Not convinced? Well, we suspect that if you're reading an article about front doors, you probably care about your front door. And who are we kidding: it's not
just functionality you're after. It's also aesthetics. And outside aesthetics often reflect what's inside.
From this point of view, your choice of front door is as revealing as your choice of hair products or the car you drive.
Well, it could be a load of old baloney – but it's fun to think about. And who knows? There could be something in it. So, without further ado, what does your front door say about
you?
Colour
They say that your favourite colour says a lot about you – although it could reveal as much about who you want to be as who you are.
A red front door, for instance, communicates decisiveness, assertiveness and drive – a very different personality profile from someone with a door in a soft pastel colour.
Of course, these days, the colour of your door isn't just the colour of the door itself. It can also be about the colour of your "door furniture": knockers, letterboxes and numbers.
Brass house numbers gleam in the sunlight. They're classy. They suggest a taste in house design that's not afraid to show off.
House numbers in chunky, wiry or comic-book fonts, however, show you're not afraid to be quirky – in fact, you revel in it.
It's incredible to think what signs your delivery driver is picking up about you simply from the colour of your front door…
Style
Ah, style. Depending on who you are, style can sit on a spectrum that ranges from "hobby" to "pathology". Wherever you sit, your style choices communicate a lot about you. It's as inevitable as people making assumptions based on your name or accent.
Front doors are no exception. A heavy timber door implies an old-fashioned rustic sensibility. Within, the smells of roast rabbit, leather polish and sheepdog. The wardrobes teem with Barbour jackets, fleeces and walking boots. Even in the city, this is a home that screams "countryside".
Other people will go for a classic front door. This style is hard to define, but if you imagine the door to No. 10 Downing Street, you're in the right ballpark.
These kinds of doors have a lot of range, but they all bespeak respectability and tradition. No airs and graces for you (although that brass knocker is a
bit on the fancy side). You don't want to stand out. Rather, you want to take your place alongside your neighbours, quietly upholding old-fashioned values.
Your choice of glass could be revealing, too. Compare a stained glass window to a bold sheet of coloured glass, or frosted glass to a simple clear pane.
Each one says something about how you want to present yourself – be it outgoing, introverted or artistic. All of that from just a front door… The mind boggles.
Furniture
Door furniture is to your front door what accessories are to your outfit. They may seem like afterthoughts, but they can really tie the whole thing together.
Just as a well-chosen bracelet or pendant can turn a run-of-the-mill outfit into a head-turner, so a letterbox, knocker or house number can level up your front door game.
Imagine you turn up to a dinner party. It's your first visit to this house. There, in the middle of the front door, is a bronze knocker in the shape of a lion's head.
What does this tell you about the night ahead? Are they animal lovers? Do they love to make an impression? Are they, um, rich? It's just one detail, sure. But it sparks the imagination.
The same goes for door handles. Knobs and levers have different taste notes, so to speak. A knob is self-consciously retro, a lever more everyday.
So, if you're getting a front door replaced, don't shy away from thinking about door furniture. "The door devil," they say, "is in the details."
Material
Finally, there's your choice of material. This, too, could say something about you and your home.
A steel door could suggest utilitarianism, graft and a scientific mind. Timber connects you to the soil. uPVC and composite doors suggest a willingness to embrace the new.
There's no right material for a front door. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. But as well as these, it can also give a glimpse into your personality, your priorities and even your way of life.
What if your front door is past its best?
If eyes are the windows to the soul, then a front door is the eye of your house. It tells visitors and even passersby about your personality and your priorities.
Or it could just tell them that, well, you need a new front door. After all, many people buy homes with a front door already in place. Sure, you'll get around to replacing it one day, but until then, it's doing just fine.
We get it. But a new front door can add a splash of colour and class to your home – not to mention improve your security.
