It's time to jingle our bells and hark our herald angels.
That's right: it's Christmas. And nothing says "Christmas" like some twinkly, sparkly, ding-dong-merrily decorations.
But you've already tinselled your tree, wreathed your front door and stuck a snow globe on every spare bit of shelf space. Where can you go next?
The answer: your windows.
Yes. Your windows are your Yuletide showroom. Deck them out with some suitably festive garb and you'll show everyone you mean Christmas business.
We're sure you're dreaming up ideas already. Here are a few of ours.
1. Give your Christmas tree top billing
Let's start with the simplest idea of all.
If your Christmas tree isn't next to a window, put it there. Job done.
It makes sense, right? The Christmas tree is the king, queen and chief elf of festive decorations. Perching it next to your window sends a clear message: "It's Christmas – and we're not going to miss a minute of it".
Of course, not everyone can shift their tree, furniture and life around at the drop of a hat. This idea is best reserved for those with large bay windows and plenty of floor space to fill.
2. Create a festive sticker display
Vinyl stickers are one of those quietly brilliant inventions – the kind you don't truly appreciate until you've seen them in action.
Well, perhaps "action" is too strong a word – but "see them in inaction" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
See, the beauty of vinyl stickers is that they stick beautifully and stay stuck. But they don't use glue – oh, no. Vinyl stickers get their stick from the static charge on your windows. Clever stuff.
This makes them wonderfully flexible. Slap your vinyl snowflakes, stars or reindeer into place and they'll cling obediently onto the glass. But if you need to move them, you can – and they won't leave a sticky residue on the window.
This also means you can roll them up and store them until next Christmas. Bonus!
3. Embrace your inner graffiti artist
No, we're not suggesting you grab a can of spray paint and knock a few thousand off the value of your house. We're talking about that old classic: spray-on snow.
Good-quality snow spray won't leave a permanent mark on your windows but will leave a lasting impression on passersby. "Who cares if it's not a White Christmas?", your windows will squeal. "It's snow day every day in this house."
As far as designs go, you've more or less got three options:
4. Give your windows a good chalking to
If you've ever given a presentation at work, you may have used chalk pens. They're great for office whiteboards because they leave a crisp, clear mark that can be wiped off easily with a dry cloth.
Well, they're not just for whiteboards. They're just as effective – and just as impermanent – on windows.
So, why not grab some white chalk markers and sketch your own Christmas window display? You could easily spend several hours ensuring every line and dot is in the right place. Or you could hand some pens to the kids and say, "Have at it". Up to you.
5. Celebrate Christmas by candlelight
There are two sides to Christmas.
One involves gloriously chintzy music, animatronic reindeer and bearded men in bright red suits. The other is all about delighting in the indoors, wrapping yourself in blankets and spending time with loved ones. It's a warmer, cosier – dare we say it, "hygge" – kind of Christmas.
We love both. But if you're more inclined towards cosy Christmas vibes, why not go all in with minimalism and turn your window into a candlelit festive feast?
It's as simple as it sounds. Grab a few heat-resistant trays, pop some candles on top and light them up. In an instant or two, your window will be bathed in a flickery, golden glow.
Safety first, of course. Always light candles on a heat-resistant surface and use proper candle holders. Don't leave them in reach of children and pets. And never –
ever
– let them burn unsupervised.
6. Turn on the twinkle
Do you love ambient lighting but are cautious around candles? We don't blame you.
The good news is that fairy lights can be just as gorgeous and don't involve naked flames.
There's a challenge here, though. How can you stick the lights around your window frame without making permanent marks? It's not like windows come with built-in fairy light holders.
You've got a couple of options:
Either option would work indoors or outdoors. If you want to hang fairy lights on the outside of your windows, though, make sure you choose a set designed for outdoor use.
