So, you fancy a new door.
Maybe your old one is looking a little tatty or doesn't chime with your décor. Or perhaps you'd prefer an upgrade because yours is lacking in the safety and security department.
Whatever the reason, picking a new door can be tough – and the questions that arise when you finally decide to buy one might come as a surprise.
When is the right time to replace a door? Do you also have to replace the frame? And what's this FENSA business, anyway?
Don't worry if you feel a little overwhelmed. We're here to help.
Here are some of the most frequent questions we're asked when it comes to replacing doors.
When should I replace a door?
We're no stranger to fighting the elements here in the UK. As the weather batters our beautiful landscapes, it can also wreak havoc on our homes.
On top of that, you have to consider general wear and tear. We use our doors every day – and over time, they really do take a slamming.
Jokes aside, doors will eventually start to look their age. Consider replacing them when you start to notice significant signs of damage, faults in the locking mechanisms or a general reduction in "kerb appeal".
Can you just replace the door and not the frame?
Yes, you can replace a door without the extra work of replacing the frame.
This option may be slightly more cost-effective. However, to go down this route you need to ensure your new door measurements are 100% correct for the new door.
Your frame also needs to be in good condition as it's now going to be housing another door for years to come. If you're unsure whether your frame is in good enough condition to remain in place, Calder Windows can help you determine the best course of action.
Do replacement doors need building regulations approval?
First, let's clear up a common misconception.
Installing a new door will rarely need
planning permission. Unless you're building a brand-new porch or other significant structure, you can go ahead and change your door without seeking permission from your local planning authority.
However, your new door will have to comply with
building regulations.
This is where things can get complicated. The regulations that apply depend on factors like whether the door is glazed, how much glass is used and whether the size of the opening is being changed.
The good news is that you don't have to worry about any of this if you use a FENSA-approved fitter. More on that below.
Do replacement doors need FENSA?
It isn't a legal requirement to get a FENSA certificate. However, it can be more appealing if you eventually put your property on the market.
FENSA certifications prove that the replaced part (your new door) complies with building regulations, is energy-efficient and is registered with the local council.
You'll only be supplied with a FENSA certificate if you use a FENSA-approved installer.
Here at Calder Windows, we are FENSA-approved. This means that any doors, windows and roof lights purchased from us will come with the correct certification.
Are all composite doors the same?
In short, no.
Standard composite doors have an average depth of 44 millimetres and a foam filling. They're extremely lightweight and can be decorated in various colours thanks to the fibreglass skin.
There is an alternative to the standard design: the solid-core composite door. This type has layers of timber within, which make it tougher and more robust than your standard composite door. The average depth of a solid-core door is 48 millimetres.
What style of door should I go for?
Ultimately this comes down to personal taste. With so many options on the market, we realise it can be a tough decision to make.
To make that all-important decision a little easier, we recommend visiting our showroom and looking around at the different doors available. Our friendly staff are ready to help you make your choice.
You should also take a moment to decide on a colour scheme – because, let's be honest, no one wants to end up with a door that doesn't match the rest of their home.
This decision is particularly important as not all styles of doors come in huge ranges of colours.
The final thing to consider is this: how much light do you want to come from your front door, if any? Nowadays, there are doors available with huge panes of glass in the middle, to the side and at head height.
You can, of course, opt for a door that lets in no light at all.
