Everybody knows what a window is, right? Well, yes and no. Despite their ubiquity, there are still plenty of myths and misconceptions knocking around about them.
Some of these are a bit of fun – but others can have implications for your property's look, thermal efficiency and even value.
Join us as we run through eight common misconceptions about the humble window.
1. Are windows liquid?
Misconception: yes, windows are a liquid.
Fact: they're made of solid glass.
Explanation: windows used to be thicker at the bottom than at the top – a fact which has led some people to think that they must be made from a liquid that has "dripped down" over time.
However, a liquid is something that fits and moulds its shape to its container. A solid, on the other hand, is something that has a definite shape and volume – and glass falls into this category.
The reason that windows used to be thicker at the bottom is that it gave them added stability.
2. Did windows used to be taxed?
Misconception: no! Surely not?
Fact: yes, and the more windows you had, the higher the tax!
Explanation: in 1696, window taxes were introduced.
Like beds and other household items, windows at this time were luxury goods – so the rich bore the brunt of the tax. Households with fewer than ten windows were exempt.
However, the policy backfired as people found ways to dodge the tax. Windows were bricked up and new houses were built with as few windows as possible. This meant that renters were paying top prices for properties with little to no light or ventilation.
3. Do windows increase property value?
Misconception: yes! Any window does.
Fact: windows can add value, but not all the time.
Explanation:
when considering installing new windows, the first thing to consider is the age and style of your property. Changing your windows to a style that doesn’t suit your house can devalue it if you’re hoping to sell.
Timeless styles tend to add value more than the latest trends – as do windows that complement your house's colour scheme.
4. Can anyone install a window?
Misconception: yes! It's a great way to save money.
Fact:
it’s possible – but not recommended.
Explanation:
if you're a fan of DIY, it can be tempting to cut down on costs by installing your own windows. But glass
installation requires a lot of skill, training and expertise.
Fitters have to follow very precise instructions to make sure that the window is installed correctly. A bad job will only lead to leaks, drafts, and other issues – not to mention expensive repair jobs further on down the line.
5. When should I open my windows for ventilation?
Misconception: you should open your windows all year round to let in the fresh air.
Fact: it may not be wise to have your windows open all year round.
Explanation: in some weather, opening your windows is a great idea. But in the cold of winter or the heat of summer, it's not always the most energy-efficient option.
A better approach can be to use a mechanical ventilation system or a window design that's been optimised for airflow. These can also help when the air outside is polluted – or when it's hay fever season.
6. Are my windows the main source of heat loss and drafts?
Misconception: of course! What else could it be?
Fact:
new windows can help keep your house insulated and drafts normally enter through doors.
Explanation: this myth probably comes from the fact that single-glazed windows can let in drafts and contribute up to 25% of the heat lost by a property.
But modern double- and triple-glazed windows are far better at insulating your property – and they let in next to no draft.
In colder climates, triple-glazed windows can provide the insulation you need – but a lot of the time, double-glazed windows are energy-efficient, cost-effective, and good at keeping out unwanted noise.
7. Are my windows weak security points?
Misconception: yes – windows always create security risks.
Fact: it depends on the type of window that you have.
Explanation: yes, glass is always going to be easier to break than a brick wall. But does the type of window you own make any difference?
The answer is a resounding "yes". Double-glazed windows often come with enhanced safety features like shatterproof glass, child restrictors and multi-point locking. These make it extremely hard for burglars to make a sneaky entrance.
If you're especially concerned about your security, you could consider a polycarbonate safety shield. Polycarbonate is 250 times stronger than glass – so it's a great way to burglar-proof your windows.
At Calder Windows, all our windows come with toughened glass and multi-point locking as standard – so you don't need to worry about
security risks.
8. Does more expense mean better quality?
Misconception: a lot of things work that way, so I’d say yes!
Fact:
higher costs don't always translate into better quality when it comes to windows.
Explanation:
many factors can affect the price of windows – the number of panes used, the style of the window, the materials it's made of, and current industry trends, to name but a few. However, a hefty price tag doesn't mean the best window you can buy.
Your best bet is to shop around and find the best deal for you.
