Over time, styles have changed but one thing has remained the same: windows continue to be used as statement pieces, just as they always have.
Windows come in all sorts of styles and can have many functions – so it's not surprising that there are hundreds of outstanding and fascinating examples across the globe.
So, if you're looking for some inspiration for a new installation, look no further. We've compiled a list of six of the most iconic windows from across the world.
1. The Rose of the Apocalypse at Sainte-Chapelle, Paris
The Sainte-Chapelle is home to one of the world's most iconic pieces of art: the perturbingly named
The
Rose of the Apocalypse.
This spectacular stained glass window is composed of 15 panels arranged in the shape of – yes – a rose. Each shows a different scene from the life of Jesus.
It looks as vibrant and intricate as ever – but was constructed more than 750 years ago after being commissioned by Saint Louis.
The Rose of the Apocalypse is admired by visitors daily and will forever be a "must-see" destination for those looking to experience French architecture and art.
2. King's College Chapel, Cambridge
You'll find this beautiful Gothic chapel on the grounds of King's College at the University of Cambridge.
The chapel has multiple mesmerising details. However, the treasure trove of narrative windows is what we're most interested in.
The windows incorporate both religious and royal motifs and shine a light on the artistic advancements of England's Gothic period.
3. The Tiffany Dome at the Chicago Cultural Center
Opened in 1897, The Chicago Cultural Center is used by the mayor of Chicago when welcoming the President or other leaders and diplomats.
Since its opening, it has been a tourist hotspot. This is partly thanks to its star attraction: an enormous Tiffany glass dome.
Constructed and designed by Tiffany Studios of New York City, the dome measures 38 feet wide and sports a unique look. The glass tiles are designed to look like fish scales, while the apex of the dome depicts the 12 signs of the zodiac.
The centrepiece, though, is a delicate-looking chandelier that dangles from the very top.
4. The aquarium window at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, Zhuhai
For this example, we head from one side of the globe to the other.
China is home to the spectacular Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, which boasts the world's largest aquarium window, according to none other than Guinness World Records.
This enormous window measures a staggering 39.6 by 8.3 metres. In case that wasn't impressive enough, the window is made from one acrylic panel – again, the largest in the world.
Of course, people are there to see the fish – not the window. The Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is home to 20,000 rare species, including several types of sharks and turtles.
This stunning build offers an insight into an underwater ecosystem and the opportunity to immerse yourself in sea life like never before.
5. The Pope's window, Vatican City
It wouldn't be a rundown of the most iconic windows worldwide without a mention of the Pope's window.
Ever since the 17th century, the Papal Apartments have been the official residence of the Pope.
The apartment building consists of several large rooms, an office for the Papal security, staff quarters, a medical and dental suite and – of course – the Pope's own study, which features the famous window.
Every Sunday at noon, the Pope can be seen at his window delivering a short speech followed by a prayer and blessings to spectators gathered in Saint Paul's Square.
This rich piece of Roman heritage has become a huge attraction for locals and tourists alike, all of whom are keen to experience this iconic event.
6. The Burj Khalifa, Dubai
Known as the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa is famous in its own right.
Located in Dubai, UAE, this extravagant skyscraper stands at 829.8 metres – or just over half a mile.
Construction of the magnificent structure began in 2004, with external works finishing five years later. The builders then took a year to complete the interiors before the building opened its doors to visitors from across the globe in 2010.
The mastermind behind the Burj Khalifa is Skidmore, Owings and Merrill – an American architectural firm that also designed One World Trade Centre in New York City.
With more than 26,000 reflective glass panels, along with aluminium and textured stainless steel spandrel panels, this building represents modern-day architecture at its finest.
As well as looking great, the glass helps to protect the building – and its inhabitants – from the intense desert sun, extreme temperatures and strong winds.
It's been reported that it takes 36 workers three to four months to clean the exterior of the building. They use state-of-the-art equipment to ensure all 24,348 windows are sparkling clean.
