Bay windows can be one of the most attractive features of a house – and they're a real joy to decorate. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.

1. Create a cosy reading nook

Here's a great idea for any bookworms out there – or for anyone who loves to lounge in the sun while relishing a good magazine.

Turning your bay window into a snug reading nook is easy. Simply get a comfortable window seat or sofa along with some plush cushions and throw pillows. Lay out a soft blanket too, if you like.

You've now got a perfect place to relax by the window with your favourite book or magazine. Consider installing some standing or floating bookshelves next to the window so you've got some choice reading materials nearby.

Now you're all set to lose yourself in a good book while the world drifts by. (Or why not take a well-earned nap instead?)

2. Build a beautiful indoor garden

If you've got green fingers, consider turning your bay window into a haven for houseplants. Install some shelving and you can surround your window with gorgeous green leaves. A small console table also works well.

Try creating a display with plants of different varieties and sizes. Add some hanging planters and window boxes to maximise space and create an amazing alfresco effect in your living room. You'll love the serenity this creates – and your plants will love the ample sunlight.

3. Carve out a functional workspace

More and more of us are working from home these days – and one of the biggest challenges this creates is finding a useable workspace that's free from clutter.

A great way to create a stylish and productive home office is by placing a floating desk near a bay window and then adding a comfortable chair. Pair it with task lighting and attractive stationery to complete the transformation.

You might want to consider facing your desk towards the room and treating the window to avoid harsh light.

Is there a better place to sip your morning coffee while checking emails than a lovely bright bay window? We don't think so.

4. Install wood blinds

A great way to calm your room is to install window blinds – especially if you're planning to use your room for work. Wood blinds come in a variety of colours and wood stains. They can provide an aesthetically pleasing way to block out excess light from outside.

5. Get a settee

If you don't want to invest in a custom, built-in window seat, a curved bench settee is a great way to accentuate the contours of your bay window. Bay windows make ideal seating areas – and a settee is a great way to make the most of this without breaking the bank.

6. Make a conversation corner

Get a couple of upholstered chairs to place by the window and stick a side table between them to create the perfect little nook for chatting away with a pal.

You could add a nice rug and perhaps a floor lamp for some pleasant ambient lighting and – voila! You've got the ideal space to catch up with an old friend.

7. Create an art display

Turn your living room into an art gallery by hanging up your favourite paintings, prints and sculptures and putting them in stylish frames. You could put up hanging rails or a gallery wall system to show off your favourite works of art, enhanced by natural sunlight.

8. Ramp up the vintage charm

Classic charm, shabby chic, retro style – whatever you want to call it, you can embrace a vintage aesthetic by furnishing your bay window with antique décor pieces and furniture. Check out antique shops and flea markets to find great second-hand pieces for very little money.

Why not add a chaise lounge or armchair, a drinks cabinet, ornate mirrors, lace curtains, or other retro-inspired accessories to bring some old-world charm to your room?

9. Get creative with DIY stained glass

You can really make a window pop by creating your own stained-glass panels. You can use glass paint or adhesive window film to achieve a stained-glass effect or even try your hand at traditional stained-glass techniques for a unique period look.

Or, if you're feeling brave, let your kids have a go at adding some colour. (You might want to use removable window paint or pens for this.)

10. Install Roman shades

Roman shades are a stylish way to draw attention to your bay windows. Individual Roman shades that stack up also have the benefit of making your windows seem taller. They work by drawing the eye up towards the shades.

11. Add curtains

Curtains can add depth and cosiness to a room and are a classic way to decorate bay windows.

Think about what colours will work with the colour scheme of the room. You might also want to consider thick curtains if noise or bright streetlights are an issue. Or, to block out direct sunlight on bright days, install sheer curtains behind your heavier drapes.

12. Create a breakfast area

Bay windows are a great location for a breakfast table. Use a simple bench or a dining table with chairs to create a bright space in which to enjoy your breakfast tea or coffee. Go for a simple design that will not block too much light from entering the room.

13. Save it for seasonal décor

Celebrate the seasons by incorporating seasonal decorations. Here are some ideas:

  • Twinkling lights, a Christmas tree and decorative snow for winter
  • Blooming sunflowers and Easter eggs for spring
  • Beach vibes with seashells and driftwood for summer
  • Spooky skeletons, cobwebs and pumpkins for Halloween

If you have kids, they'll love decorating the windows with you – and you can get truly creative without having to commit to any decorations for too long.

14. Paint an accent wall

Painting the area around your bay window can add a sense of space and vibrancy to your home.

Consider your current colour scheme before you decide on a colour for your feature wall – dark, earthy tones often work well to make your room appear dynamic and exciting. Or you could go for a jazzy wallpaper to really make the room pop.

15. Go bohemian

Add some bohemian flair to your room by decorating your window with eclectic textiles. Think colourful rugs, embroidered throw pillows, patterned curtains and unique bits of furniture, like an eye-catching coffee table.

Beaded curtains or string lights around the window can add to the boho vibe too – as can potted succulents and decorative floor lamps.

16. Make a little Zen retreat

Create a serene and peaceful retreat inside your own home by adding a bit of relaxing Zen design to your bay window.

Floor cushions and a meditation bench can help you achieve some inner peace, as can soothing scented candles. Natural materials like bamboo and stone can also help create a calming atmosphere. Finally, why not install a small indoor water feature to create a quiet centrepiece?
